THERE ARE THINGS ABOUT SNOW…

Linda Ford Posted on February 23, 2014 by LindaFebruary 23, 2014

Yesterday we had scattered snow flurries. We’ve had enough snow already. But I confess there is something I like about it.

march 5 snowfall 005

I like walking in falling snow.

Gently falling snow dusting my clothes, quietly sliding from my face. The world cloaked in purity, silenced so all I hear is my own breathing, my own muted footsteps. God-breathed beauty. ‘Silence is the language of God, all else is a poor translation.’ Rumi

One of my favorite poets-Robert Louis Stevenson put it this way:

The cold wind burns my face, and blows
Its frosty pepper up my nose.
Black are my steps on silver sod;
Thick blows my frosty breath abroad;
And tree and house, and hill and lake,
Are frosted like a wedding-cake
.

(from his poem Winter-Time)

Am I the only one who enjoys this activity?

DON’T HAVE A BIRD!

Linda Ford Posted on February 15, 2014 by LindaFebruary 15, 2014

Except I do. Have a bird that is. Meet Scottie–a slightly neurotic African Gray Parrot.

scottie

I enjoy Scottie’s chatter…unless I’m on the phone or trying to listen to TV and he drowns me out.

I got a meadowlark bird stuffie at a museum in Montana on one of my research trips. When youu press the stuffie bird belly, it sings like a meadowlark. It wasn’t long until Scottie picked it up. It’s a cheerful song to hear in the morning.

He also says jerk, stupid cat (I guess I said that more often than I realized as I waited for the cat to amble over to the door. She always takes her time to test and see how long I’ll wait.)

But back to Scottie. He whistles, he calls supper and he makes the sound of the microwave beeper. He mumbles and grumbles (He’s not imitating me with this).  He’s messy. As one of the kids so aptly said, he’s a litter bird. But he’s amusing.

Oh. And he’s a she as we discovered last year when he/she presented us with three eggs.

Pets are fun and help us enjoy life, don’t you think?

YES, IT’S TRUE. I ADMIT IT.

Linda Ford Posted on February 10, 2014 by LindaFebruary 10, 2014

I know it’s odd but I like getting up in the dark. The dark feels sheltering–like I’m cocooned in a safe, warm place. I look out the window and the lights of town sparkle in a choker of gold and silver jewels. Suspended overhead is a white-light star and on the right days, a barely there sliver of a moon. Beauty clothed in darkness.

As I sit and enjoy my first cup of coffee–my favorite one of the day.
my favorite coffee
I write in my journal, have my daily devotions and just enjoy. I am not feeling rushed or anxious to get on with my day. After all, technically it’s still night.
How appropriate it is for the orange dawn to flare as I go to my computer…starting my day in unison with the the sun.

ORDINARY DAYS

Linda Ford Posted on February 1, 2014 by LindaFebruary 1, 2014

heavy snow fall mar. 5 010

An ordinary view from my house.

I am grateful for ordinary days. Days when I putz along doing routine things. When I can follow a familiar routine and at the end of the day look back with satisfaction at what I’ve done. Not that such days are without pressure but it’s a familiar sort of pressure–how to motivate myself? Coffee now or later as a reward? It’s not the kind of pressure that has me running from one thing to the next, never quite finishing one task before I have to attend to something else.

Maybe it takes those fractured days to make me realize how special are the ordinary days.

Psalm 118:24 This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

OLD SCHOOL TYPING

Linda Ford Posted on January 18, 2014 by LindaJanuary 18, 2014

I learned to type on a typewriter at school. Then I got a typewriter of my own– a sleek blue, portable one in a carrying case.  In fact, I wrote some of my earliest articles on that machine.

I still get nostalgic about using one. I guess I’m not the only one. An instructor at Calgary’s Alberta College of Art and Design has plans to bring them back to his classroom. You can read about it here.

The first typewriter that became commercially successful appeared on the market in 1874. I haven’t seen one that old but I’ve seen a few unusual ones (according to recent standards.)

Both of these below were seen in the Bonners Ferry, Idaho museum.

Seen in Colorado museum. First one dated 1890. A Blickenspefer.

And one that might be more familiar to some old timers as seen in the Whyte Museum in Banff, Alberta.

banff 105  I enjoyed using a typewriter. I liked the way the keyboard was slanted and having to push the carriage back at the end of each line. I guess I’m not the only one because you can get typewriter keyboards and some innovative people have actually combined a typewriter with their laptop. Check out typewriter keyboard in your search engine for a look at what’s available.

How many of you learned to type the old-fashioned way? Do any of you still use a typewriter? What do you think of the experiment at the Alberta College of Art and Design? Do you see any value in it?

CHOOSE THE TITLE

Linda Ford Posted on January 12, 2014 by LindaJanuary 12, 2014

I have to come up with a name for my new miniseries starting in Oct. It’s about three young women who were abandoned as young children and adopted by an older couple.

IMG_2547

They now live with their parents on a farm in Montana. Unfortunately the farm is in the middle of a large ranch and the rancher doesn’t like it.

I have only come up with 2 possibilities.

MONTANA BRIDES

BIG SKY SISTERS.

Which do you think is best? Or do you have other suggestions? You will have to email or go to Facebook to answer as I have shut off the comments on my blog. Thanks to spammers.

CLAIMING THE COWBOY’S HEART

Linda Ford Posted on January 5, 2014 by LindaJanuary 5, 2014

Claiming the cowboy's heart cover

CLAIMING THE COWBOY’S HEART is out this month.

Just in case you’re interested in how this story came to be (and even if you’re not) here’s some background on the story.

I wanted to do another three-book series in my mini series COWBOY’S OF EDEN VALLEY. I love working in threes. However the books are set in early ranching country when men far outnumbered women so I had to import women to romance the cowboys. Thus I created three young women who have recently come from England for a visit on the ranch.

Jayne—heroine in CLAIMING THE COWBOY’S HEART- is sister to Eddie Gardiner, hero of THE COWBOY’S SURPRISE BRIDE. She is fleeing the memories of her fiancé’s death and brings two friends with her. She is determined to learn to shoot a gun in order to protect herself, but she didn’t mean to accidently shoot a passing cowboy.

Seth, the unfortunate cowboy, thinks someone is after the money he is taking to pay the caregiver he’s hired to tend his father who has had a stroke.

If I could pick an actor to play Seth’s role in a movie, I’d want Russell Crowe. I suggested him to those who do the cover art for the book. What do you think? Is there any similarity?

Catherine Zeta Jones would play the part of Jayne in a movie version of the book.

Of course, Seth is not pleased about being shot even if by a pretty thing like Jayne. Will the delay mean his father’s caregiver will leave? What’s he going to do about Jayne? Guess you’ll have to read the story to find out. Lol

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Linda Ford Posted on December 29, 2013 by LindaDecember 29, 2013

hawaii 2008 102

2014 is almost here. I love New Years. I always make resolutions. Sure they are often the same–eat less, exercise more, make better use of my time– but to me it feels like a chance to start over.

I actually get excited about how I can use the New Year as a set point to get on track. I recall one year I resolved to never let a 15 minute period pass without accomplishing at least one thing even if it was only to put something away. It was one of the best choices I made. (Mind you, I’m not quite so deliberate about it any more.)

There’s a difference between resolutions and wishes. If I could make wishes come true, I would wish for power to be restored to those down east who have been off the grid for over a week (shiver). I would wish for peace in the middle east and for warm shelter for those displaced. I would wish for a cure for cancer and hatred.

On a personal level, I would wish for winged fingers, a way to convert blood into ink (based on quote ‘Writing is easy. You just open a vein and bleed.’ Not sure of the source and didn’t look it up.) I would wish also for a more successful way of getting the story inside my head into words.

How about you? Do you  like the New Year and resolutions? Have you made resolutions that made a difference in your life?
