INTERVIEW

Linda Ford Posted on April 3, 2011 by LindaApril 3, 2011

Here is a copy of an interview I did on eharlequin.com

1. What are some things you enjoy doing in your free time?

Free time? Sorry, I am unfamiliar with this term. Lol. Actually I have my fair share of free time and have some favorite activities. I like to travel though I don’t get a chance to do much of it. I like to walk, have some favorite paths and am always looking for more (though I mostly walk up the road in one direction or the other). I love research which sometimes includes both of the previous activities. But a day spent in a museum, preferably talking to the curator, is a good day. I also like reading, watching TV, going to movies and baking. The jury is out of whether or not I like gardening. We grow a huge vegetable garden. It tends to be a love-hate relationship but not one I intend to give up. (I love fresh vegetables and prefer my own frozen ones in the winter to purchased ones.)

2. How do you balance real life with writing life?

This question made me laugh. I make New Year’s Resolutions and every year I vow I will achieve balance. Every year I fail in some degree. Mostly I focus intensely on whatever is right before me. If I’m writing, I’m fully engaged to the exclusion of all else. If I’m on an outing, I am engaged in that. If my family is visiting, my mind is on taking care of them. But balance? Haven’t found it.

3. What are some of your favorite books and authors?

Too many to name. I enjoy Linda Lael Miller and Linda Goodnight but those are only two of my favorites. I like Elizabeth Berg and Harlan Coben. My tastes are very eclectic. Give me a good story and I’m hooked.

4. Which of these have had the biggest impact on you and why?

I think the book that has had the greatest impact on me recently is a non-fiction book by Dara Marks, Inside Story, The Power of the Transformational Arc. Not that I have all the principles of this book fixed in my mind but I learned so much from this book. I also had a chance to attend a workshop by the author and she was an excellent presentator.

5. What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced as an author?

So many stories. So little time. My mind is constantly creating new story ideas until sometimes I order it to cease and desist. Then of course there is the challenge of learning what story structure is and how to apply it to each story. ..a never ending struggle for me.

6. What writing organizations do you belong to, and what value have you gotten from them?

I belong to RWA, the Calgary Chapter of RWA (CARWA), Faith Hope and Love, ACFW-American Christian Fiction Writers. Earlier in my career it was in these groups that I learned what romance was and how to write it. Now I appreciate the support and camaraderie.

7. What is the most difficult part of the writing process for you?

Ideas are easy. Concepts are abundant but figuring out to craft them into a solid story structure is the most difficult part for me. That and doing revisions.

8. What is the most enjoyable part of the writing process for you?

I love coming up with concepts and exploring them. I mostly enjoy the fast first draft. Most of all I like seeing my book in print with a beautiful cover.

9. Are you a plotter or pantser?

A planner maybe? I don’t do a detailed plot before I write but I do need a road map of sorts. One thing I learned through trial and error and mostly failure is that I had to discover the process that works for me and then not let anyone convince me their way was better. That is not to say I can’t learn from others and that I don’t experiment but in the end my way is what works for me.

10. How has writing for Love Inspired impacted you personally?

Working with the editors has pushed me to a deeper level in my writing. I really appreciate that.

WINTER JOYS

Linda Ford Posted on March 28, 2011 by LindaMarch 28, 2011

This weekend I had some of the family visiting and we talked about winter. It seems to be consuming a lot of our mental space. Mostly because it’s encompassing almost every aspect of our lives. But we decided to list some of the things we LIKE about winter. (and saying it would soon end wasn’t allowed.) laughing monkey So here is our partial list:

  • 1. No flies
  • 2. Bugs are killed so don’t grow to giant spiders.
  • 3. There is now weeding and no mowing.
  • 4. It’s pleasant to turn on the oven and cook an oven meal or make cookies.
  • 5. Winter sports–skating, hockey, skiing and tobogganing.
  • 6. Roll up the rim. For non-Canadians, that is a give away contest by Tim Horton’s coffee chain. Roll up the rim of the take out cups to discover your prize. You could win a vehicle. I’ve won a free coffee and a free cookie.
  • 7. There’s not a lot to do outside so it makes it easy to stay indoors and work. For me that’s a bonus. Sitting at the computer is easier so I can hopefully produce more.

All this positive stuff is wonderful but I’m still anxious for spring–so anxious I bought a picture to cheer me up.

Enjoy blue sky, bright flowers and the warm breeze that dries the clothes hung outdoors.

FINDING A GAME

Linda Ford Posted on March 20, 2011 by LindaMarch 20, 2011

I love the wonderful things research turns up.

In the story I was working on recently, I wanted my characters playing a board game that several could play together. The time period was before the invention of games like Monopoly so I turned to the internet to discover what games were popular in the 19th century. To my surprise and delight, I found the information easily.

The first board game commercially produced in the United States was The Mansion of Happiness. A game based on Puritan values, the object is to be the first to travel around the spiral track to reach the Mansion of Happiness in the center of the board. If you land on the virtuous attitudes such as honesty, temperance, truth, sincerity, to mention a few, you advance six places. However, landing on and possessing such vices as cruelty and ingratitude you must return to your original position. And should you–heaven forbid–get into a passion you will take to the water and have a ducking to cool off.

Here is a picture of the board used for the game. (Picture from wikipedia)

What I found really amazing was how the game fit into my story and could be used not simply as a diversion but as a means for the characters to discuss some of their problems.

If you’re interested in how it works in my story, you’ll have to wait a bit. This is the third story in my Buffalo Gals of Bonners Ferry series and I have no release date for them yet.

CONFESSIONS OF A WRITER

Linda Ford Posted on March 13, 2011 by LindaMarch 13, 2011

Here’s a peak inside the mind of a writer. I’m not about to say whether or not this is normal for a writer. I’ll let you be the judge. embarrassed

1. I sometimes get up in the morning eager to find out what happens in a story then realize–shoot–I have to finish writing it.

2. I laugh at things my characters say or do. laughing-1 As if I didn’t make it up. Though, honestly, there are times when I’m writing and it feels more like I’m a spectator than the creator.

3.I tell my friends about people in my stories as if they are real. duh (Of course in my mind, they are.)

4. I like having written better than writing. Starting is particularly hard. Every morning I have to fight resistance. writing

5. Everything is research–a trip to the coffee shop where I watch a young couple not speaking to each other, a walk through a park where I take note of places where it would be nice for a young couple to sit and make up.  couples

6. The best revenge is making someone who has been nasty the villain in a story.

7. I sometimes look up from writing a summer scene and am disoriented by the fact it is winter outside my window. And visa versa.

So if sometimes I act a little strange you now know why.

A WRITER’S COCOON

Linda Ford Posted on March 6, 2011 by LindaMarch 6, 2011

I’m trying to be positive about the long, cold winter we’re in. It’s a great time to cocoon in and write. I’ve been doing so. Telling myself all the benefits of a cocoon. How a grub spends his winter there and emerges a beautiful butterfly. acfw indianniapolis 2010 021

I figure the only thing I’ll emerge as is a pale person squinting at the sun. 🙂

I guess I need to find something else to help myself think positive about the weather.

So I’ll focus on my writing projects. Watch for upcoming releases.

Oct 2011 A Thanksgiving story in a collect called Once Upon A Thanksgiving. My novella is titled Season Of Bounty.

In Jan., Feb., and March of 2012 I have a three book series set the the Depression. It’s about three sisters who are coping as best they can in the difficult times. The series is titled Three Brides for Three Cowboys and the books are The Cowboy Tutor, The Cowboy Father and The Cowboy Comes Home.

I’m busy on future projects so cocooning is okay for now. Sort of.

SIMPLE COOKING

Linda Ford Posted on February 26, 2011 by LindaFebruary 26, 2011

I’ve been trying for months (years) to simplify cooking meals so I don’t dread it every day. I’m pleased to say I feel like I’ve made significant progress in that direction.

First, by oven browning large amounts of ground beef, or stew meat, etc. to freeze for the basis of a meal.

Secondly, be deciding at the beginning of the week what I will serve every day. It’s flexible but the worst part of meal preparations is deciding what to make.

One thing one my list of possible meals is soup. Often served with cornmeal muffins, biscuits or fresh whole wheat bread. (Fresh bread. Yum.)

At this site:http://www.simplysoups.com I found the following soup recipe.

VegetableBarleySoupVegetable Barley Soup

Ingredients –

3 cups Cold Water
1 (14-1/2 ounces) can Diced Tomatoes
1 (10 ounces) package Frozen Mixed Vegetables
1 medium Zucchini, quartered lengthwise and sliced
2 stalks Celery, chopped
2 medium Carrots, chopped
1 medium Onion, chopped
4 ounces Tomato Sauce
1/3 cup Regular Barley
2 Vegetable Bouillon Cubes or 4 teaspoons Instant Chicken Bouillon Granules
1/2 teaspoon Dried Basil, crushed
1/4 teaspoon Dried Oregano, crushed
dash Crushed Red Pepper

Preparation:

1. Add cold water, diced tomatoes, frozen mixed vegetables, sliced zucchini, chopped celery, chopped carrots, chopped onion, tomato sauce, barley, bouillon, dried basil, dried oregano, and crushed red pepper to slow cooker.

2. Cover and cook on LOW for 10 hours.

Of course I had to make a number of adjustments. No frozen mixed vegetables so I used beans and peas. No zucchini on hand so I used broccoli chopped fine. I added chopped green pepper and a can of mixed beans (kidney, romano, black-eyed peas). I have an event to attend this afternoon so will come home to a pot of simmering soup. If I have unexpected company I will cook rice and serve the soup over rice with a garnish of grated cheese and chopped green onions.

I’ve actually discovered meal time isn’t the ordeal it used to be as long as I know what I’m going to make.

WINTER SURE IS LONG

Linda Ford Posted on February 19, 2011 by LindaFebruary 19, 2011

Do you remember these words from Bambi (the movie)? and his mother’s reassurance that it does seem long but won’t last forever. I’m clinging to that fact–it won’t last forever. But in the meantime, I am dreaming of summer activities. I thought I’d share a pictorial essay of the things I’m dreaming of. Go ahead. Dream your own summer days.

THE WONDER OF THE INTERNET

Linda Ford Posted on February 12, 2011 by LindaFebruary 12, 2011

Without the Internet my week would have been much more boring than it was.

First, the February Charisma magazine came out with a big spread from Love Inspired to celebrate Valentine Day. I have an article in it plus one of my books is included in the ad space.  Cool Check it out yourself. http://strang.imirus.com/Mpowered/book/vstrfil11/i1/p1

Then someone sent me a link for people who like books and bookshelves. Cool stuff. Don’t let the name throw you though a warning–you might find a couple of bad words if you look for them. But why look? Enjoy the books and bookshelves.

Another cool link came my way. http://www.godvine.com/An-Unforgettable-Version-of-Amazing-Grace-Performed-by-Celtic-Woman-93.html I know there’s a way to post the video directly but technotard that I am, I couldn’t figure it out.

Then from Twitter came this lovely nugget. See my name there as one of the Screen shot 2011-02-11 at 2.16.24 PMtop Love Inspired Historical authors!

Yup. I enjoyed the Internet this week.

STRANGE BUT TRUE

Linda Ford Posted on February 5, 2011 by LindaFebruary 5, 2011

We have a neighbor who own a dog. A border collie. And we all know how much border collies like to chase, herd and work. A border collie without work is TROUBLE.

This dog is no different. With no cows or sheep to herd, he tries to herd the vehicles passing his driveway. I suppose he considers himself successful because the herded vehicle races down the road.

However, his timing is set for cows and sheep. Not vehicles. He’s a menace to himself. And alert drivers. I’ve clipped him at least once but it doesn’t deter him. In fact, the other day as I went to town, he came racing across the field determined to catch me. The only reason he didn’t is because the deep snow slowed him down. That’s not strange or unusual in and of itself but I learned the rest of the story when I got home.

truck 002

My husband says to me when I return home,  did I see his truck? No. Didn’t notice anything so went outside and this is what I saw. What happened?

The dog chased him, misjudged and barreled into the truck, tearing the fender half off. Oh. I’m feeling bad about the dog when…wait a minute. I went to town after hubbie. You mean to say the dog was still chasing vehicles with a vehemence after that? Yup. Dog okay. Truck not so much. $2700 worth of damage. This is either one lucky dog or one very stupid dog. Maybe both.
