Bloom where you’re planted

Linda Ford Posted on January 23, 2011 by LindaJanuary 23, 2011

I got invited to join someone on a trip to Victoria, BC in mid-Feb. According to the official city web site, Victoria is located in sub-Mediterranean zone, and enjoys some of the most moderate weather in all of Canada. Victoria boasts an average of 2,183 hours of sunshine yearly, and an eight month frost free season. Average annual rainfall is 26.2 inches (compared to over 50 inches in New York). The average monthly rainfall in winter is 5 cm (2 inches) and in the summer is less than 2.5 cm (1 inch).

Victoria has a very low humidity ratio, and almost constant offshore breezes which keep summer days from becoming too hot, yet summer evenings can cool off; therefore a sweater or a light jacket is recommended. Although winters are mild and rarely include snow, warmer clothing is recommended between the months of November and March.

Starting Feb. 24th or thereabouts, Victoria has an official count of blooms. Blooms in Feb.? (Over 21 billion counted last year.) I have to look in my photo archives to enjoy blooms.

Then there’s the museums, the shops, the book store, the inner harbor with sunshine, people, activities and cherry trees in blossom.

I really need to go and get some better pictures taken with a digital camera.

However, deadlines and people needing care make it impossible for me to go at this time. So I’ve decided to bloom where I’m planted by enjoying the good things of my life. I can go to a quilt store and see color in the swatches of fabric. I can go to the library and enjoy the books. I can walk when the weather allows and dream of spring.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said: “For everything you have missed, you have gained something else.” So I’m looking for what I’ve gained by enduring the rest of winter without a break.

A TYPICAL WRITING DAY

Linda Ford Posted on January 15, 2011 by LindaJanuary 15, 2011

7 a.m. rise and shine. Forget the shine. Just rise. Get client up. Make coffee. Have coffee. Have breakfast while checking email and answering it. Set up client to enter stories and poems he wrote years ago into computer.

9:00 Open story document. Read over last chapter to figure out where I am in story. Daily quota is 3000 words and I am already behind a day. Will try and make up a few hundred words today. Emphasis on try.

9:10 Help client with computer program.writer at computer

9:15 Back at computer. Write 100 words.

9:30 Son with broken ankle needs help. Need to make coffee. Have to clean coffee maker. Might as well start laundry while I wait for water to reheat.

9:45 Back to writing. Need to focus scene. Where do I want it do go. Do brainstorming on scene elements–goal (of character), motivation for goal, obstacles and conflict encountered and the DISASTER. How does the scene go wrong? 700 words before next interruption.

10:15 Change laundry. Grab handful of pretzels.

10:30 Email dings. Check email. Respond to letter from reader. (Love nice letters from readers). Respond to letter from a friend. Check out video someone recommends.

http://www.facebook.com/l/e307f6qdnp4u2YtI2IqaSABCndw;www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_I9ld-oDTs

Washing machine fails to start. Go slap it. All my appliances are getting old. I’m told by the repair man that the life expectancy of all appliances is now 10 years. TEN YEARS. What kind of appliances are they building nowadays? Don’t get me started on that question?

10:45 1300 words. Now switching point of view characters. Have to figure out what this characters wants. Need to do some scene brainstorming–goal, motivation, obstacles/conflict and disaster.

11:15. Up to 1586 words. Then called away to fix client’s word processing program. I can’t fix it. What did he do? I save everything and shut down everything. While I wait for the computer to fix itself, I change the washer and drier. Fold laundry. Sweep under bird cage. Make more coffee. Am I the only one who know how to make coffee? Strip sheets from client’s bed. Get word processing program going again.

11:45. Return to my writing. Try and figure out what I was doing and where I was going and what those silly notes mean.

12:00 Lunch time. 1981 words done. A far cry from the 3000 quota and the dream of more. But I’m not going to town today so maybe I’ll get more done. writing snowman

I hate to admit it but it’s a pretty typical day. I wonder how much I’d accomplish if I had no interruptions and shut of the internet. But by the end of the day I did achieve my quota and a little more but I can’t do it on days I have to take people somewhere or run errands.

NON-WRITING WRITING

Linda Ford Posted on January 9, 2011 by LindaJanuary 9, 2011

One would think writing a story meant sitting before the computer and creating words on the screen. writer at computer Well, yes it does. but there is so much more.

For instance, this week I had to come up with title suggestions for a new series slated for release in 2012. My working title for the series was Wanted: A Few Good Men and I named each story after the hero and heroine. Not very original but I don’t get married to titles. After some back and forth the title for the miniseries is Three Brides for Three Cowboys and the first book is The Cowboy Tutor.

Then there is coming up with art fact information that goes to the art department for the creation of a cover. The cover has to reach out and grab a reader. It has to portray the theme and feeling of the story but not necessarily the exact details. The more precise information I can provide, the better the cover. Maybe. Though I’ve had no complaints about the Love Inspired Historical covers. I think they are great. dakota father

So my January book, Dakota Father, shows the little girl with the hero and heroine on the Dakota prairie.  prairie cowboy

My March release shows a farmer/rancher and his little girl. It’s a very nice cover and does show the spirit of the story–an independent little girl and a father who loves her.

I’ve been asked to do a Thanksgiving novella to be released Oct. 2011. First I do a proposal–synopsis and first chapter. When it’s approved I can submit the complete manuscript. Again, you’d think it simply meant writing the story and sending it. Sort of. But first I do all the editing I can do. Make sure the story is sound. Try to eliminate repetition. Make sure I haven’t started something I didn’t finish. Then the boring stuff. I use a program called Autocrits that analyzes repeated words, poor sentence structure, etc.

I get a chart something like this:

Overused Words       Found       Suggestion

Could                        9               Remove about 3 occurrences

It’s an excellent process for me and makes me tighten my writing but oh, it is tedious. frustratedwriter  My last step is Textaloud–a program that reads my story to me in a boring flat tone. It takes a great deal of concentration to follow word by word. But I always find things to change…sentences that need tightening, explanations that need fixing, etc. I have to make myself do it.

Then I print out the manuscript and take it to the courier. It is sitting at my elbow waiting for the trip tomorrow. That is if I can get out after the winter storm we are in the grip of.

HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Linda Ford Posted on January 2, 2011 by LindaJanuary 2, 2011

Happy New Year to all.

I love the New Year. I must be crazy but I like taking time to reflect on all the good things of the past and assess how I could change my life for the better. Yes, it seems that I am always wanting to change the same things–more exercise, better eating habits, a more balanced life–but I rejoice in the changes I’ve accomplished. urbanpole300fitnessedition_thumb26This year, for instance, I discovered Nordic walking poles. I really enjoy using these and don’t care what people think.  So far, I’ve had no comments. If you’re interested in learning more, check out this site. http://urbanpoling.com/

I have also been a faithful attendee at Weight Watchers meetings and reached my goal weight. Yahoo. Weight Watchers has a new ‘improved’ program so my challenge this year is to learn how to follow those guidelines.

As to balance. Sigh. I don’t know if I’ll ever achieve it. At least not so long as there are only 24 hours in a day. And limited amounts of energy.

I hadn’t intended to welcome in the New Year (at least not in local time.) However, events changed that. Youngest son fell on the ice early in the evening of New Year’s Eve and sprained his ankle. A visit to the local ER and some xrays showed he had broken it. A spiral fracture on one bone (the small one) and muscles torn off on the other side. Means surgery to fix it which can’t be done in our local hospital. It was after midnight by the time all the details were sorted out.  He had to be moved to Red Deer where there is an orthopedic surgeon. I had to have him there by 8 a.m. New Years day. But there is a serious back log of people awaiting surgery so he is on ‘wait.’ Maybe today they will fix his leg.

So you might say we started off the New Year on the wrong foot (or at least the wrong ankle.) But I’m grateful it isn’t worse. Yes, it’s not nice but it will mend.

Happy New Year to us and you.

CHRISTMAS MEMORIES

Linda Ford Posted on December 18, 2010 by LindaDecember 18, 2010

I just came back from a walk where I was thinking of things I remember about Christmas. I realize some of my best memories are based on things/events one might not consider positive.

I remember one Christmas or was it two? when my brothers and I were confined to bed with one of those childhood illnesses that used to be common. I think it was red measles. We had to stay in bed, avoid bright lights and eat light meals. But my mother decided not to let it ruin the holidays. She set up three cots for us in the living room where we were warm and could see the tree. And we opened our gifts in bed. I’m not sure how the boys felt about it but being in bed surrounded by my new doll and books didn’t seem like a hardship. In fact, I remember thinking it was rather special.

I’m guessing the boys would have rather been outside playingdec 5, 09 006 in the snow.  Here we are one snowy winter.

Another Christmas which could have ended in sadness was the year there were no Christmas trees available. I can’t say why. My mother again came to the rescue. She fashioned a tree from clothes hangers and green tissue paper and hung lights on it. It wasn’t a real tree but it was pretty. And not at all a Charlie Brown tree.

Then there was the Christmas I got a doll my mother made. It had moveable limbs and a face that looked almost real. It was big enough to wear REAL baby clothes. I wish I still had it but we were taught to share our toys with the less fortunate so I hope some underprivileged little girl somewhere got as much enjoyment from it as I did.

I guess it all boils down to the things that make Christmas special are not the big price items. It’s making the best of what we have, sharing simple things, enjoying the moment.

May everyone enjoy the best Christmas present ever–Jesus–Deity wrapped in human flesh. A gift beyond compare.

WHERE A WEEK GOES.

Linda Ford Posted on December 10, 2010 by LindaDecember 10, 2010

There is nothing like babysitting two sweet little girls for  four days and then having some kind of unkind stomach flu hit me to make a week vanish. Very nasty flu. In fact, for the first time in my life, I fainted. Weird. I came to outside the bathroom door wondering where I was. I felt around and realized I was on the floor. My first thought was it was kind of comfortable. Maybe I’d just stay. My second thought—following several minutes later–was someone was likely going to trip on me in the dark. So I staggered back to bed.

I’m fortunate. I only have a scrapped forehead and a few bruises for my adventure. But it is great research material (that I don’t care to repeat).

But on a cheerier note–check out my free on-line read. A cowboy story released one chapter at a time over 20 days. http://www.eharlequin.com/articlepage.html?articleId=1566&chapter=1dakota father

In part, the story is promotion for my January release–Dakota Father.

To see the two girls I babysat, follow this link and figure it out. I hope the link will work for you. You likely have to hit CTRL and click at the same time. The pieces are fairly large but there is a clicker on the upper left hand side to make it smaller. Have fun.

CHRISTMAS IS….

Linda Ford Posted on November 28, 2010 by LindaNovember 28, 2010

Christmas is almost here. That means a number of things:
Christmas letters to write and cards to address. Presents to buy and wrap. Craft shows to enjoy. potpourri 004 Christmas is a major celebration in the area where we live and I love it. One evening soon I will drive around town and enjoy the many, many Christmas lights. The picture to the right was taken at the local Christmas fair in November.
Christmas is also a time for Christmas stories. A perfect time to enjoy a love story.
Last year about this time I was asked to write a novella for a book to be shared with one other author. I loved the idea. I’d always wanted to write a story where one of the characters is discovered sleeping in the barn. I recognized how the idea vaguely echoed the birth of Jesus in a barn. This was my chance to write that story. You will find it in the December release which should be on shelves soon. If it’s unavailable in your area go to my home page for links for purchasing it on line. christmas under western skies
My goal in this story was to reflect some of the Christmas themes. I hope I was successful to some degree. You will have to judge for yourself.
I was thrilled when the editors contacted me last week and asked me to do another Christmas novella for a book to be released next year. I readily agreed and must now get something ready to present them in December. So it will be a busy month for me.
To everyone: enjoy the lights, the parties, the festivities of the season but don’t forget Jesus is the reason for Christmas.

JOY IS…

Linda Ford Posted on November 20, 2010 by LindaNovember 20, 2010

What is joy? How do we find it and keep it? These are questions I’ve considered lately. And here are my conclusions. (I warn you they are not profound but simply what I’ve found.)

Sometimes joy is a bubbling song bursting from my heart, my mind, my lips. Sometimes I have to search for a sign of it and nurture it into existence.

A Chinese proverb says: Once joy scatters a hundred griefs. (I might insert a hundred sadnesses.)William Shakespeare says ‘Joy delights in joy.’ Perhaps these two statements provide the key. I need to find the joys, nurture them so grief is banished (or at least reduced to size) and let joy beget joy.

Here are some of the joys I found lately.

Joy is a phone call or visit from an old, dear friend.

It is a beautiful sunrise and a big window to enjoy it. sky 017

Joy is a child’s smile.

Tayanna

It is a good book.

A hot cup of coffee.    july 08 002

A flower.

Henry Ward Beecher:
The art of being happy lies in the power of extracting happiness from common things.

The Bible says:  A merry heart doeth good like a medicine.

So find joy today and always.

CREATIVE FUN

Linda Ford Posted on November 13, 2010 by LindaNovember 13, 2010

There are lots of ways to observe creative procrastination. Some of them are even productive like reading over workshop notes. Or even brainstorming. I have fun with my Inspiration Program. It allows me to create templates or bubbles like the one below that I can do quick brainstorming with. It’s fast, fun and sometimes even helpful.

A big sheet of newsprint works well too. I can use different colored pens and pencils and even crayons as I explore a ton of ideas until they start to form a story.

Or just for fun, wordle

I plug in the titles of my books, my name and look what I get. If you go to the site it is actually in different colors. I can mess around with different lay outs too. How fun is that?

But I think I have procrastinated long enough. I’ll let you do it now.
